Ambiance
The north-east of the third arrondissement is home to the ‘Conservatoire des Arts et Métiers’ and is relatively calm away from the main streets, which are a hustle and bustle of traffic, shops and brasseries. The Place de la République is surrounded by restaurants, bars and hotels and is a crossroads to the 10th and 11th arrondissements.

In the centre of the third the commerce is of a wholesale nature serving the fashion industry and generally offers quieter streets. There are some pleasant regular markets and the crowd is a harmonious mix of ages.

The labyrinth of narrower southern streets lead to the area known as the Marais and is home to the Picasso museum, the National Archives and renaissance Place des Vosges.

Here, the pace is more pedestrian with the tiny parks, restaurants, cafés and bars. The buildings are lower and are architectural mixture of ancient, traditional and some modern.

The 3rd becomes trendy the further south you head due to the popularity of the area with local artist and gay communities.

Apartments
Apartments are less grandiose as a rule but the mix of architecture makes them charming. While not the most chic of addresses it does offer a strong community feel and is reasonably well served by public transport.

Those wanting larger apartments should look further to the north but there tends to be less soul to the area. This arrondissement offers relative peace and quite but a bit of life is never far away.
