Ambiance
Until recently the nineteenth has not been a particularly interesting area of Paris. Developments of La Villette and the ornate park of Buttes Chaumont have renewed interest in this district, which is predominantly residential.

La Villette has undergone a facelift and now offers a canal side recreation park with its promenades, parks, cinemas and cafés. It leads to the science park which hosts the latest exhibitions focusing on technology and human developments.

The Buttes Chaumont is a family favourite with its lakes, waterfalls and large lawns, although the surrounding areas are again somewhat more industrial and shabby.

Apartments
The up and coming areas around La Villette and Buttes Chaumont do offer Haussmann style architecture to those who are already familiar with Paris. Many young families are moving to the calmer areas, which is bringing up the tone of the area.

The opportunity of relatively inexpensive rent may be attractive but this is one of the scruffier and less inviting districts of Paris. Apartments are found in all shapes and sizes and the main arteries are a mix of old buildings in disrepair, unattractive modern blocks and lively commerce.
